Say “YES” to the present moment

"The moment you become aware of a dysfunction, the dysfunction is already beginning to dissolve."

Tolle starts by dividing thinking into 2 categories:
Practical mind: A tool for driving safely, making budgets, or remembering your anniversary.
Noisy mind: The disease of re-living regret, looping mental arguments in the shower, and comparing your vacation to social media.

Most people don’t realize their:
• Chronic self-criticism
• Relentless anxiety & worry
• Unnecessary guilt & regret…has a cause.

As children, our energy of fascination, delight, wonder gets shut down repeatedly over time. Yes, it's important to learn social reciprocity, listening, and contextual awareness. The 'brakes' on our emotions and expressions. But then we overcorrect. We shut ourselves down and subtly look for others' permission, or a glass of wine before letting the radiant parts of ourselves shine brightly. The next step in maturity after learning the 'brakes' is learning how to take your foot off the brakes. To let the fascination flow again very deliberately and wholeheartedly.

Our thoughts behave like an annoying book or film critic. Constantly criticizing and invalidating the current experience. Notice how a subtle scent of disdain descends falls on any moment we judge, any experience we treat as something to get through on the way to something 'better'. And because of it - we become isolated, bitter and disconnected. But the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so." If you try to sit alone for 30 minutes with the sting of dissatisfaction, the average 'mundane' situation, 'boring' commute, or 'ordinary' meal, each contains more aliveness and meaning than any thought we could possibly have about it.

The Nature of Negative Thoughts
Eckhart Tolle describes negative thoughts as a form of compulsive thinking that can become an addiction. This addiction is characterized by the inability to stop the cycle of negative thoughts, which often give a false sense of pleasure that ultimately turns into pain. According to Tolle, negative thoughts are not just random occurrences but are deeply rooted in the ego, which is the part of the mind that creates and maintains a false sense of self.

The Ego and Negative Thoughts
The ego thrives on negative thoughts because they reinforce its sense of identity and control. Tolle explains that the ego is constantly engaged in a narrative about the self, which includes past regrets, future worries, and judgments about the present. This narrative is often negative because the ego finds its strength in conflict and struggle. By identifying with these thoughts, individuals can feel a sense of importance and existence, even if it is a painful one.

The Power of Now
One of Tolle's central teachings is the importance of living in the present moment. He argues that the primary cause of unhappiness is not the situation itself but the thoughts about it. By focusing on the present, one can break free from the cycle of negative thoughts and find inner peace. Tolle emphasizes that the present moment is the only reality, and by being fully present, one can observe and detach from the egoic mind.

Steps to Overcome Negative Thoughts
Awareness: The first step in overcoming negative thoughts is to become aware of them. Tolle suggests observing the thoughts without judgment. This creates a space between the observer (you) and the thoughts, allowing you to see that you are not your thoughts.
Recognition: Recognize the futility and destructive nature of negative thoughts. Understand that these thoughts are not serving you and that they are a product of the ego. This recognition can create a desire to let go of these thoughts
Presence: Stay present and observe the negative thoughts and emotions in the present moment. Tolle emphasizes the importance of being the observer of your thoughts rather than being identified with them. This practice can help you disengage from the negative emotions and thoughts.
Neutralization: Neutralize the power of negative emotions by acknowledging them without engaging in them. Tolle suggests focusing on the feeling inside you and accepting its presence without judgment. This can help you release the emotional charge and move towards a more positive state.
Positive Transformation: Once you have neutralized the negative emotions, you can gradually replace them with positive thoughts. However, Tolle warns against simply replacing negative thoughts with positive ones without first addressing the underlying emotions. This can lead to a sense of inauthenticity and resistance.

Practical Techniques
Mindfulness Meditation: Tolle recommends mindfulness meditation as a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of negative thoughts. By focusing on the present moment and observing your thoughts and emotions, you can develop a deeper awareness and detachment from the egoic mind.
Gratitude: Cultivating a sense of gratitude can help shift your focus from negative thoughts to positive ones. Tolle suggests acknowledging the good in your life as a foundation for abundance and happiness.
Acceptance: Accepting the present moment as it is, without resistance, can help reduce the power of negative thoughts. Tolle emphasizes the importance of saying "yes" to life and surrendering to what is.

 Personal Transformation
Eckhart Tolle's personal experience with negative thoughts is a testament to the power of his teachings. In his book "The Power of Now," he describes a transformative experience at the age of 29, where he was able to break free from a cycle of deep negativity and find inner peace. This experience led him to understand the nature of the ego and the importance of living in the present moment.

Eckhart Tolle's approach to dealing with negative thoughts is rooted in the principles of mindfulness, presence, and the recognition of the ego's role. By becoming aware of negative thoughts, recognizing their futility, staying present, neutralizing negative emotions, and gradually transforming them, individuals can break free from the cycle of negativity and find inner peace and happiness.
